Along with the debut of the 2018 BMW M5 this week, it also came to light that the latest from the Bavarian automaker’s performance division would also get standard all-wheel drive. Initially, some RWD purists were upset, but BMW was quick to point out the refinement, added power, and ability to toggle to a rear-wheel drive mode, if desired.

Yes, it seems that BMW M is still all about having your cake and eating it, too. For 2018, the new M5 will offer a larger grille and intakes, and a twin-turbo V8 with 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Start it up, and the car defaults to M Dynamic mode with its 3.2-second leap to sixty. But if you turn off Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), three more drive modes open up: 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD. These gradually tone down the power involvement to the front wheels, with the latter bringing the power split to zero unless absolutely needed.

This brawny sedan will arrive at our BMW dealership in Greenville, NC next spring. While the full specs and options haven’t been launched, we do know that plenty of M Performance gear ranging from Carbon Ceramic Brakes and an M Servotronic Steering system are in the cards.
