In fact, the color of your oil doesn't really matter. Black oil may just mean that the additives in the oil have begun to work. It's better to watch the quality of the oil.

-You can't switch between synthetic and conventional oil.
You can switch between oils if you want to make a change. You're never bound to one kind.

-Filters don't have to be changed every oil change.
When your oil is changed, you should get in the habit of having your filter changed as well. The filter could be covered in the harmful particles that are within your old oil that you're trying to get rid of.
