There are some notable changes for the X5 between the 2021 and 2020 model years, including a new hybrid engine available in 2021. The new engine improves upon the previous hybrid powertrain by adding more maximum power potential and more torque. The X5 has a virtually identical appearance as the X5 in 2020. However, its interior gets some updates with a new mapping technology called BMW Maps and more app support. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included in both model years, but they are standard as wireless features in 2021.

Performance

In 2021, the BMW X5 is just as powerful as it was in 2020, but it has more power options than before. Starting in 2021, the X5 is available with a capable hybrid powertrain that combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor to deliver approximately 390 HP. The hybrid system also gives the X5 a commendable towing rating of 7,200 pounds. There are also two gasoline engines available for the 2021 model year that carry over from 2020. The standard engine on the 2020 and 2021 model years is a V6 that creates approximately 330 HP and 330 LB-FT of torque. An automatic transmission is standard in 2020 and 2021.

Appearance

Appearance is mostly the same for the X5 in 2020 and 2021. In both years, the BMW X5 has a sleek and attractive appearance characterized by a double-arched grille in the front with a distinctive kidney shape. LED lights are standard, and the base trims on both model years are equipped with automatic headlight technology. A few exterior features are available, including a night vision system and adaptive LED lights in the front with laser lights.

Features

Cabin size is the same for both vehicles with a five to seven seating capacity depending on your preferences. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard in both model years, but they are added as wireless technology in 2021. Two USB-C charging ports are expected in 2021. The infotainment system in the 2021 model year is also enhanced with BMW Maps' inclusion, a new technology that provides helpful features, including navigation and real-time traffic information.
